Is the End of the World Near?

Is the end of the world near? I saw “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,” the other night. I got the impression that some people expected a real “Hollywood” ending. In years past, under this presented scenario, we would predict that at the very end of the film the analysts had made a major mistake and the world really didn’t end after all.

And we would all go home and “feel good.”

Spoiler alert: In the closing scenes of this film, the electricity goes out and things begin to shake and stir. Big crashes boom in the distance, followed by a bright flash of light. Then the screen fades to white.Judgement Day The audience around me gasped. They didn’t believe it was going to happen, or, what’s more, that the writer believed it either.

The recent film “Melancholia” ended in a similar fashion. It was bizarre in its own portrayal of the end of the world. How is one supposed to feel?

There are scenes in “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” that show families gathered on the beach, lining up for water baptism. But the two main characters only observe. They feel quite satisfied with their present spiritual state of being, or void of it, and for the first time they hold hands.

Do people “feel” more spiritual these days? Are we prepared or preparing for such a climax? It would seem this subject is ever on the forefront of people’s minds. Even Hollywood is selling the drama.

When the end of the world comes, will we have a month to get ready? Decades ago, as a child, I was taught in school that the world would end in a flaming ball of fire. The Bible teaches us this, too, in II Peter chapter 3. The world is being reserved for fire.

Last month, our best-selling eBook was “Revelation in Seven Weeks: A Bible Study.” I am beginning to understand why. People are looking for answers. For certain, this is the best place to find them, in the book of Revelation.

Paul tells us in the New Testament that no one knows the exact hour of the Lord’s return.ArmageddonThis would include Armageddon and Earth as we know it. After all the destruction, a New Earth will be born for those of us who escape the unquenchable fire. While the “mystery of lawlessness” is certainly about us, before the world comes to an end, according to Paul in Thessalonians and Timothy, the “lawless one” must be revealed. He hasn’t yet. And those who have “fallen asleep” will be taken. We are still here.

So don’t lose heart, brothers and sisters. If you have a solid relationship with Christ, do not fear. When all these things begin, God’s wrath will come down, and it will be poured out upon the earth for more than one month. For those of you who are uncertain of your faith and standings with Christ Jesus, now is the time for salvation.
