Let Your Mind Dwell on Pure Things

Wars and Rumors of Wars: What Should Christians Dwell On?

What can believers do when all around them are wars and rumors of wars? The world is full of disappointments, sorrows, loss, pain, suffering, death, disorder and every wicked thing. It is so full of darkness.

What did Jesus mean when he said in Matthew 10:16, “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves?”

What a graphic picture. Sheep in the midst of wolves. It seems as if our protection lies in wisdom, to outsmart the wolves while preserving our innocence. Could it be that we are to overcome the wolves without killing them?

Today, who are the wolves and just how smart is a serpent? We know the serpent in the garden was wily and cunning. What skills of a serpent can we match?
A serpent has keen eyesight. A serpent refuses to heed with his ears. A serpent protects his head.

Learn and gain understanding. Train your eyes to see. Know the word of God and keep away from hearing the lies of the Gnostics and Mystery Babylon. Guard your mind.

We can see references to these throughout the New Testament. We also see Jesus’ words to the churches in Revelation, “He who has ears to hear and eyes to see…”
Just like the serpent. These words have new meaning.

The spirit of Gnosticism filtering into the early body of believers, and it never died. It has a new face, so you might not recognize it. Nevertheless, it is the spirit of the world, comes dressed in sheep’s clothing and its desire is to “kill, steal and destroy.”

It is dark and wicked and aims to lure believers away and take the very heart of them. If your eyes are opened, you will see it all around you to that point that nothing seems real. You might even think your whole life has been a lie, even if you were raised within the church.

How do we defeat it?

What Should Christians Dwell On

Stay alert. Recognize that death rules the earth. Fight compromise in your life. Peter says in I Peter 1: "Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance..."

Peter continues to encourage and build. Reading on to chapter 2 he says in verse 11, ""Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul." This world is NOT our home. We are on a stop-over destined for glory and the coming kingdom of Christ our Lord. So travel light. All of our belongings here are just baggage, and the things we lust after, weighing down our soul.

Besides being wise, yet innocent, we are to heed the words of Paul in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
