Faith and Influence

by Natatia Baker

When I was very young, I used to enjoy going to Sunday school with my grandparents. The vicar (my granddad) would let me pick the hymns that were sung in his services. As I got older, I wandered away from attending church, because I had little interest in religion.

In my mid-teens, my father decided to return to his faith. Perhaps that was due the influence of the new addition to my family-my step mum. He met her at a Christian holiday centre we frequented on the Isle of Wight where she was working and we were all on vacation. Despite not being religious, I absolutely loved going on holiday there year after year with my grandparents. Most of the happiest memories I have are my being there!

Now approaching my mid-20s, becoming a mother myself, I can understand why some parents choose to have their children christened. As neither me nor my partner were christened, and not very religious, I didn’t feel that this was appropriate for my daughter. Instead, we had a naming ceremony where my granddad read prayers and gave her a blessing.

As for my personal beliefs right now, I don’t follow the Christian faith, but do go to Church every year for a Christmas service and occasionally for Easter. I would like my daughter to go to Sunday school when she is old enough so she has the chance to learn about Christianity and then can choose her own beliefs. I appreciate that my parents and grandparents have allowed me to go on my own journey regarding faith and religion, and I will do the same with my daughter.
